Types of low voltage circuit breakers every engineer must know
Low voltage circuit breakers are simply a type or category of circuit breakers which we have learned earlier in our previous article. Generally, we all know those circuit breakers are specially designed or manufactured to be used in both homes or domestic wiring and transmission areas.
The low voltage circuit breakers are mostly the types or categories of circuit breakers used in domestic wiring. There are mainly 4 types of low voltage circuit breakers that are used to protect houses, homes, and workplaces. These types of circuit breakers are purposely designed for domestic use and low voltage areas of electricity.
Low voltage circuit breakers are also designed to perform a specific function or to offer specific safety or protection to homes and offices. All the main types of low voltage circuit breakers are moving with their various rating, working principles, operations, and functions. Low voltage circuit breakers are the common or popular circuit breakers that are designed for domestic, commercial, and industrial applications
Here are the top 4 main types of low voltage circuit breakers that you must know as an engineer or an electrical student listed and explained below.
- MCB
- MCCB
- RCB
- RCCB
MCB
MCB simply means Miniature Circuit Breaker, its current is rated to an ampere not more than 100Amp. Trip characteristics are normally not adjustable. This type of breaker is used in domestic wiring for protection against an overload current.
MCCB
MCCB simply means Molded Case Circuit Breaker. These are the types of circuit breakers that are rated to a current up to 2500Amp. Its trips current can sometimes be adjustable in longer ratings.
Low voltage power circuit breakers can be mounted in multi-tiers in low voltage switchboards or switchgear cabinets.
RCCB
RCCB is one of the protective devices among circuit breakers which simply means Residual Current Circuit Breaker and it is also known as RCD which means Residual Current Device.
RCCB or RCD is an electrical protective device that is specially and purposely designed to separates or disconnect an electrical circuit whenever it detected an earth leakage current in the earthing wire of
an electrical system or current for the purpose to protect against fire outbreaks and electrical shock and electrocution that is being caused by direct contact.
RCB
RCB is also one of the specialized protective devices among circuit breakers or breakers that simply means Residual Circuit breaker. It is a circuit breaker that is specially and purposely designed for the
protection of an electrical circuit against earthing faults and short circuits by either disconnecting the electrical circuit or by tripping off whenever it senses a danger concerning the short circuit or earthing system of that electrical circuit.
