Top 3 powerful categories of circuit breakers every electrical engineer/engineer must know before doing any electrical installation
Before we start with our topic of the day, let us take a look at what circuit breakers or breakers are.
What is a circuit breaker?
circuit breakers are simply electrical protective device that trips off automatically whenever there is an available faulty electric current or leakages flow through an electrical circuit or a particular circuit to keep other circuits intact.
In all, there are mainly three (3) powerful categories of circuit breakers and they are moving with their own functions, areas of work, working principles, rating, and many more.
Here are our top 3 categories of circuit breakers listed below;
- Low voltage circuit breakers
- Medium-voltage circuit breakers
- High voltage circuit breakers
Low voltage circuit breakers
These are the types of circuit breakers that are commonly or popularly known circuit breakers that are designed to be used in domestic, commercial, and industrial applications.
There are mainly top four (4) types of low voltage circuit breakers that are available in the market with their various applications, functions, and operations.
Medium voltage circuit breakers
These are the types of circuit breakers that is one of the most essential electrical installation circuit breakers that are rated between 1 – 72KV(Kilovolts) and may be assembled into a metal-enclosed switchgear line ups for indoor use or sometimes it may be an individual component that is installed in a substation.
Air-break circuit breakers replaced oil-filled units for indoor uses or applications but have now been placed by a vacuum circuit breaker up to somewhere like 40KV.
High voltage circuit breakers
We all know that electrical transmission networks are now protected and controlled by high voltage varies but the transmission of power work is usually taught to be 72.5KV or high or high voltage circuit breakers are nearly always solenoid-operated with current sensing protective relays operated through current transformers.
In substations, the protective relay scheme can be completed protecting equipment and buses from various types of overloads or ground or earth fault.
High voltage circuit breakers are broadly classified by their medium used to distinguish the arc. There are mainly top 4 types of high voltage circuit breakers that every engineer must know.
